Not All Fats are Bad for You

Fats like the OMAPREM oils actually restore and repair, preventing disease. With hundreds of studies now on the books demonstrating the effectiveness of Omega-3 in preventing cardiovascular disease leading to stroke, the importance of this supplement in the diet is paramount. Omega-3 is an old friend, we have known for some time that it protects against memory and cognitive dysfunction and migraine headaches.

EFA's Essential Fatty Acids
Just as minerals, vitamins and protein are essential for life, the EFA's are also on the list of must have nutrients because they cannot be manufactured by the body. There are two classes of EFA's Omega-3 and Omega-6.

EFA's regulate most body functions including a primary nutrient source necessary to the brain. As infants the mother's milk supplies our first source of EPA and DHA, vital fatty acids needed for prenatal and postnatal brain development. Cow's milk and formula do not contain these essential fatty acids.

Balancing Omega-3 and Omega-6

Omega-3 include EPA, DHA which are the long chain fatty acids found in some fish, and ALA the short chain fatty acid found in some seeds, nuts and dark green vegetables.

Omega-6 include LA, GLA and DGLA acids found mostly in vegetable oils, though processed oils such as sunflower and safflower have very little LA acids in them and cannot be considered a dependable source of complete Omega-6.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats function as intended only in balanced form. The correct ratio is 1:1 or 2:1. The American diet today is from 10:1 to 20:1 so the rare Omega-3 usually needs to be supplemented to achieve optimum balance and health. Fish is a rich source if not frozen, recent findings discover freezing destroys Omega-3's. When Omega-6 exceeds Omega-3 it becomes a destructive force responsible for autoimmune diseases, platelet clumping, allergies, insulin resistance and skin disorders.
